What is a cataract? Definition and treatment

Cataract in detail

Cataract is an opacification of the crystalline lens. The crystalline lens is a normally transparent lens in the eye whose role is to focus light rays on the retina. The crystalline lens can be deformed (“accommodated”) by the action of the ciliary muscle, enabling zooming in for close-up vision.

Cataract treatment

Cataract surgery removes the crystalline lens from your eye and, in most cases, replaces it with an artificial lens. Normally, the lens of your eye is clear. A cataract blurs the lens, eventually affecting your vision.
